James M. Mason, as chairman of the U.S. Senate Finance Committee, received a letter from Spencer F. Baird commenting on the importance of James D. Graham's botanical and zoological discoveries in Texas and New Mexico. Baird recommends appropriating $5,000 to publish the findings. Asa Gray wrote to J.D. Graham about his plans to publish an account of Graham's discoveries. Graham's specimens were gathered as part of the official survey of the U.S.-Mexican boundary.
